Sky Briefing #017 — A Minor Solar Storm and a Return to Philadelphia
A magnetic filament erupted on the Sun on August 14 and sent a CME toward Earth. It arrives tonight. Not a historic event, not dramatic — but a G1 storm on a polar night flight around midnight UTC is better than no G1 storm. The week also has a route worth flagging: Philadelphia gets its first Qsuite connection in years, and Mumbai gets a direct line to Toronto come October.

CME arrives tonight: G1 storm, aurora on polar routes through early Tuesday. The filament erupted August 14; the CME delivers a glancing blow to Earth on August 17, with NOAA forecasting G1 conditions into the early hours of August 18 UTC. On polar night routes crossing the North Atlantic between 21:00 and 04:00 UTC (JFK–LHR, YYZ–FRA, ORD–AMS), the auroral oval sits directly over the flight track. Kappa Cygnids: active through August 27, fireballs come without warning. The Kappa Cygnids are not a headline shower — peak rate is about one meteor per hour. What sets them apart is the occasional bright fireball, magnitude -2 or brighter, appearing with no buildup and briefly lighting up the cabin window. Qatar Airways returned to Philadelphia with Qsuite. That is the news. Since August 1, Qatar Airways operates a daily Doha–Philadelphia service (QR727/728) on an A350-900 with Qsuite business class and Starlink Wi-Fi. Philadelphia had gone without a direct Gulf carrier connection for years. The city now has the best business-class product flying the Atlantic, and broadband to go with it. Air India opens the first Mumbai–Toronto nonstop from October 25. Three times weekly on a Boeing 777-300ER — Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays — starting October 25. It is the first and currently only direct link between the two cities. Until now every Mumbai–Toronto passenger routed through Delhi, Dubai, or a European hub.
