GPS & Location
GPS isn't working in airplane mode
Make sure Location Services are enabled: go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and check that it's turned on. Then verify that Skyty has permission to access your location under the same menu.
GPS is a passive receiver and works independently from cellular and WiFi. However, Location Services must be explicitly enabled — airplane mode doesn't disable them, but they may have been turned off separately.
GPS signal is weak or inaccurate
A window seat provides the best GPS reception. The signal can penetrate the aircraft fuselage, but accuracy may be reduced from an aisle seat.
After enabling airplane mode, it can take 30–60 seconds for GPS to get a fix. Place your iPhone near the window and wait for the accuracy indicator to show a stable value (typically 4–10 meters).
Speed shows 0 km/h even though I'm flying
GPS needs a few position updates to calculate speed. After initial lock, wait 10–15 seconds — speed, heading and course will start updating once Skyty has enough data points to compute your movement.
Altitude
What's the difference between altitude and altitude above ground?
GPS altitude is your height above sea level (MSL). Altitude above ground (AGL) is your actual height above the terrain directly below you. Skyty calculates AGL by subtracting the terrain elevation from your GPS altitude using offline elevation data.
For example: at 11,000 m GPS altitude over the Alps (terrain at 3,500 m), your AGL is 7,500 m.
Altitude values seem off by 30–50 meters
GPS altitude is inherently less accurate than horizontal position — deviations of 20–50 meters are normal. This is a limitation of GPS technology, not Skyty. The terrain data itself has an accuracy of approximately ±16 meters.
At cruising altitude (10,000+ m), a deviation of 30–50 m is negligible and won't affect your experience.
Maps & Data
How much storage do the offline maps use?
It depends on the region. The DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) is approximately 50–80 MB. All of Europe is around 300 MB. The data is downloaded once and used for all future flights in that region.
Can I delete map data to free up space?
Yes. You can manage your downloaded region packs within the app and delete any region you no longer need. You can always re-download them later.
Where does the terrain data come from?
Skyty uses elevation data from the NASA SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) and the EU Copernicus programme. Both are freely available, scientifically validated datasets with approximately 90-meter resolution — more than sufficient for flight altitudes.
Battery & Performance
How much battery does Skyty use during a flight?
With airplane mode active, Skyty typically uses 10–15% battery over a 2–3 hour flight. Since cellular and WiFi are off, the overall battery drain is lower than normal phone use. We recommend starting with at least 50% battery for long-haul flights.
Airports & Navigation
How do I set a destination airport?
Tap the nearest airport panel at the bottom of the screen to open the airport section. From there you can search for and set a destination airport. Skyty will then show the remaining distance and estimated time of arrival (ETA).
An airport is missing or has wrong data
Please let us know at support@skyty.app with the airport name, IATA/ICAO code and what's incorrect. We update the airport database with each app update and will include the correction.
SOS
What does the SOS button do?
The SOS button prepares a message with your exact GPS coordinates, altitude and timestamp that you can share via text message, AirDrop or other channels. It does not automatically contact emergency services — it gives you your precise location data ready to share when you need it.
Privacy & Data
What data does Skyty collect?
None. Skyty processes all data on your device. No location data, no usage data, no analytics are sent anywhere. There are no accounts, no logins, no servers involved. Your flight data stays on your iPhone. See the privacy policy for details.
General
Which iPhones are supported?
Skyty requires iOS 17 or later. All iPhones that support iOS 17 are compatible — from iPhone XS and later.
Is Skyty available for Android?
Not at this time. Skyty is currently available for iPhone only. An Android version may be considered in the future based on demand.
Is Skyty allowed on flights?
Yes. Skyty uses GPS, which is a passive receiver — it only receives satellite signals and does not transmit anything. Using your phone in airplane mode with Location Services enabled is permitted on all major airlines. Always follow crew instructions regarding the use of electronic devices.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Skyty uses Apple's StoreKit for purchases. Sign in with the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase, and your Premium unlock will be restored automatically. If it doesn't restore automatically, check for a "Restore Purchases" option in the app settings.
